HISTORY

At the end of the fourteenth century, The Knights built a castle in Ryn, serving as a base for fighting with the Lithuanians. Until 1525, the castle was the seat of the commander. After two years of the construction of the castle, then the Grand Master of the Order Winrich von Kniprode arrived in Ryn to inspect and take over the castle, and returned to the Malbork by waterway. Thus from 1378, Ryn had connection with the Baltic Sea! On the July 21st., 1723 Ryn received city rights granted by the Prussian King Frederick William I. And in 1853 the castle was converted into a prison. Since July 2006, the castle operates an exclusive four-star Hotel - ZAMEK RYN, satisfying the most demanding guests. The hotel offers guests nearly 300 beds in 140 rooms, which 5 of these are luxuriously furnished royal suites and 20 rooms are of a higher standard.
There are also other historic buildings in the town: Dutch windmill, mill and many houses. Ryn is the seat of local government and the main center of administration and economic self-governing community. Town consists of 3100 inhabitants. Municipality of Ryn has a picturesque landscape of varied glacial lakes. The lake of Ryn is connected to the Great Masurian Lakes. There are numerous marinas available for sailors, campsites and resorts. Tourist hiking and biking trails allow you to reach to the interesting places in the municipality, including the Teutonic mounds near the village guard of Orło. Great location of the city between the lakes of Ryn leading to the Great Masurian Lakes and the charming villages on the route of water canal from Węgorzewo by Giżycko up to the Ruciane Nida, offers great opportunities for active recreation throughout the whole year.
